  • Careful planning and a dash of inspiration are all that's needed to turn your bedroom into a dream sanctuary

A comfortable and alluring bedroom is all about combining form and function. Maximise storage for an uncluttered, serene look, focus on effective ambient lighting and cosy bedding and you won't go far wrong. Here are our tips for creating the ideal scheme.

    Make a statement

A statement bed will do the talking in both compact and large bedrooms. If space is limited, either use a bed that offers plenty of in-built hidden storage, or space underneath to store boxes and vacuum bags. Debra McQuin at McQuin Partnership suggests choosing bedside tables or ergonomic wall-mounted lights. 'Try to think creatively,' she says. 'If there is no space for a headboard, then paint one on the wall. And in all bedrooms, small or large, a sense of real luxury comes from a good mattress, high thread-count sheets, and a soft rug to step out of bed onto. These are the things that make the most difference to a sense of well-being.' In this scheme, a vibrant wallpaper and full-length curtains create a sense of cosseting luxury.

    Add opulence

Play up your bedroom's assets, whether it's a beautiful period mantlepiece or wide windows, and emphasise a room's proportions with a few striking pieces. In this case an elegant chandelier anchors the space while a Venetian-style mirror adds a note of glamour. In a compact space, don't be afraid to opt for fewer, larger pieces of furniture which will make a greater impact than smaller pieces. Provide one or two key focal points to draw the eye to the outer spaces of the room, whether a striking piece of artwork, or headboard covered in luxe fabric.

    Light it right

Your bedroom needs to be perfectly functional too. Install more than one lighting circuit so that you can switch out the lights at the bedside without the need to cross the room. A dimmer will help create a serene evening ambience while dimmable downlighters work well when task lighting is needed. If space is limited, opt for a wall mounted lamp with an elegant shade like this one, freeing up space on the bedside table. Opt for a warm yellow quality of light, rather than a cool, blue light. 'Make sure lighting helps to visually maximise the space too,' advises Mary Barber-Fray of Mary Barber-Fray Interior Design. 'For example, try lighting the narrower sides of the space to provide a sense of width, whether with wall lights or tiltable recessed spotlights. Choose lampshades that allow light to reflect upwards if you need to give some height to a low ceiling too.'

    Easy living

If space allows, introduce a living room feel into your bedroom for the ultimate in hotel boudoir chic. Chairs, upholstered ottomans, artwork, books and treasured collections in a zoned area will create a mini sitting area and add a touch of cosiness. In this scheme an antique dresser painted in a dramatic black provides a natural focus. 'No matter how small your bedroom is, a chair is always practical,' says Nicola Holden of Nicola Holden Designs. 'If it causes too much clutter, consider plumping for something like the unobtrusive Ghost chair by Philippe Starck. Choose hard-working furniture such as ottomans and chests of drawers, and don't neglect forgotten areas such as those above a door, where built-in shelving can look effective.'

    Sleek storage

Well-planned storage helps establish a peaceful bedroom scheme. In this room, simple built-in storage incorporating a window seat makes the most of limited space while providing a focal point. Maximise storage by using clever multi-functional furniture where suitable, using the walls and height of the room as well as the floor space. Here, form and function dovetail perfectly with the graphic tones and angular shapes of the wall-mounted light, headboard and side table providing both style and practicality.
